Papagayo is in the center of
what are probably the most beautiful series of beaches on the island, located
approximately 5km east of Playa Blanca. It can be difficult to find,
but you can access it either by driving across unpaved roads (where insurance
may not cover your rental car), or by boat from Puerto del Carmen or Playa
Blanca. The beautiful
views and quiet coves make it well worth the trip.
With recent additions of a toll booth (3 Euros) to pay for some smoothing of the
road surface, access tends to be much easier than in the past. Shame really,
but the addition of a few more tourists doesn’t do anything to alter the natural
beauty of this part of the island. It was originally a nude beach, but with the
recent increase in popularity, this is pretty well limited to nearby Playa
Mujeres or Punto Muelle.
